Honestly, when Elijah’s on stage, this musical rocks out! In between the two JUMPIN’ numbers of “Famine in the Kingdom of Israel” and “The Challenge”, we get one quiet, contemplative song: This “The Test of Faith”, sung by The Widow. Learn about this song here.
The text of the story of Elijah and the widow is in 1 Kings 17:1-16. As I imagine what the widow was thinking while she was making the bread, I think of the principles highlighted in this song. I enjoy this poster from Creative LDS Quotes, with wording similar to this song’s lyric, (here under #17).
I’ve written about faith before: In the musical, NOAH, the 4 women in Noah’s family are tasked with gathering enough food to feed the animals on the ark (lyric here, under #11). The song “Faith” can be heard here. “Faith” is an upbeat song and it made people want to get up an dance! But that was a different look at faith: It was “Wow, this is a big job and I’m not sure if I can do it” song on faith.
The widow’s test of faith is different: She is betting her life! And not just HER life but the life of her son! I am astonished at her actions and wonder what she saw and sensed in Elijah that led her to “step into the darkness”. Her faith-at-the-risk-of-death reminds me of Indiana Jones’ leap of faith in The Last Crusade!
Most people I know have had a serious test of faith. This song is a compilation of every great talk and lesson on faith that I’ve ever heard. I wrote it because sometimes having a lyric or quote or scripture to hang onto is just what we need to help us make a difficult decision.
I’m sure you’ve had your own “test of faith” – what has helped you make it through?
